Indications

Treatment of bacterial infections of the lungs, nose, ear, bones and joints, skin and soft tissue, kidney, bladder, abdomen, and genitals caused by ciprofloxacin-susceptible organisms. Infections may include urinary tract infection, prostatitis, lower respiratory tract infection, otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, skin, bone and joint infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, and gonorrhea.

Administration

May be taken with or without food. May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones. History or risk of QT prolongation; known history of myasthenia gravis. Concomitant use with tizanidine.

Special Precaution

Patient with known or suspected CNS disorders, risk factors predisposing to seizures, or lower seizure threshold; history or risk factors for QT interval prolongation, torsades de pointes, uncorrected hypokalaemia/hypomagnesaemia, cardiac disease (e.g. heart failure, MI, bradycardia); positive family history of aneurysm disease, pre-existing aortic aneurysm or dissection and its risk factors (e.g. Marfan syndrome, vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypertension, peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease); diabetes, previous tendon disorder (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), G6PD deficiency. Renal and hepatic impairment. Elderly, children. Pregnancy and lactation.

Ciprofloxacin HCl 500 mg Oral Suspension is used to treat and prevent certain infections caused by bacteria. It is also used to treat infections of the lungs (e.g. bronchitis), urinary tract (e.g. cystitis), and to treat certain types of pelvic inflammatory disease. It is used to treat infections of the skin and soft tissues, including urinary tract infections, pelvic pain, and sinusitis. It may also be used to treat other sexually transmitted infections as determined by a doctor. This medication does not prevent transmission of HIV or other HIV-1/2-Like Infections.

Daktacos®

Do not use if you are allergic to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics. Avoid contact with the active ingredient in this product.

This product is a single-dose product. Do not dine in or around your corner store. Stock at no extra cost. Discontinue at any time. Do not use if you have been advised by your doctor to use quinolone antibiotics.

Sucrose Polyester: This product is not expected to have any effect on sugar and may be used for personal,breast, or medical reasons. Do not use if you are advised by your doctor to use quinolone antibiotics.

How Ciprofloxacin works

Ciprofloxacinworks by blocking the actions of certain bacterial proteins (such as DNA gyrase, topoisomerase IV) which is essential for the bacteria to survive. As a result, it destroys the susceptible bacteria and prevent their further growth and multiplication within the body which helps in reducing the severity of the infection.

  • impairment of vision, taste and smell and hearing, depression, memory impairment, severe fatigue and severe sleep disorders

  • Health Tips for Ciprofloxacin

    • Take Ciprofloxacin approximately 30 to 60 minutes before you plan to have any surgery as frequent dosing can be harmful.
    • Avoid large meals (such as pizza, steak, Discussion group meal) as they can reduce the effectiveness of Ciprofloxacin. Also, avoiding large meals (such as pizza, steak, Discussion group meal) and consuming large quantities of alcohol (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after) should be avoided as it can also affect its effectiveness. Also, excessive alcohol consumption may cause dizziness and fainting. Ciprofloxacin can also cause a mental status change, especially if the infection is causing severe drowsiness.
    • Ciprofloxacin can cause a skin reaction with an appearance of redness, flushing, stuffy nose, difficulty in breathing and a HeaviskTips score which is the severity of the skin reaction. The HeaviskTips score can affect how well the skin has maintained its skin safety and effectiveness. Also, the HeaviskTips can make it more difficult for the patient to breathe.
    • Use Ciprofloxacin with caution in patients with liver disease as it is metabolised in the liver and therefore hepatic risks can be increased.
    • It is not recommended for use in patients with any heart problems or if they are taking other medications. Also, Ciprofloxacin can cause a mental status change, if there is a sudden decrease or loss of hearing.
